CHAPTER 11

Though Jesse answered the questions JT and David posed, Gideon could tell this new information on Foster had struck Jesse deep. He could also see that he was holding back on some of the details. Out of courtesy for Michelle, or something else entirely? Gideon didn’t know. He wasn’t going to ask, not with others present. If it looked like it continued to plague Jess when they were alone, he might consider bringing it up again to see what might come of it.

JT was fascinated with Michelle’s involvement. His questions invariably kept coming back to her and not the issue with Foster. It annoyed Gideon a little to see further proof of her hold on Jesse’s other self. Would this have been how he would have turned out here if Michelle had gotten to him first? Gideon wanted to think not. After all, JT also had the advantage of still having his mother around. His Jesse had been escaping Oliver Madding’s stronghold, in specific search for Gideon. That was a huge difference, in and of itself.

“Michelle’s not the threat here,” Gideon interrupted when the interrogation kept going on and on. “And no, I can’t believe I just said that, either.”

“It helps knowing more about Foster, though,” David said. “It’s easier to plan that way.”

JT nodded. “Whatever we do, it has to be quick. Our window of opportunity isn’t a large one here.”

“How on earth did you ever get Foster’s attention in the first place?” David quizzed.

Gideon glanced at Jesse, but the other man’s silence was more than enough answer. He knew he would have to tell the whole story. It wasn’t going to endear him any more to JT or David, but Jesse was the one he worried hearing about it. Gideon wasn’t necessarily proud of what he’d done, but he wasn’t going to apologize for it. He would have done whatever necessary to find Jesse. He still would.

That didn’t mean he didn’t recognize that this could go badly for him.

“I’m not sure—”

“No, it is.” Gideon smiled at Jesse, grateful for his support. Leaning back in his seat on the couch, he said to the others, “Just remember I was desperate to find him, okay? Think about what you would do if you knew the other was out there, if you could only find him.”

JT and David exchanged a quick look before Gideon launched into the story.

Grit clogged the back of his throat as soon as Gideon climbed out of the car. Though night had long since fallen, dirt coated every inch of this backwater Texas town, from the roofs of the houses that hugged the earth to the grime smeared across the windows. It didn’t seem possible he could find what he was looking for here, but the stone in his pocket got hotter as soon as he stood in the open air, just like John had said it would. The dimensional rifts weren’t far. If he wanted, he could simply wander around to pinpoint exactly where they were.
